If you smell gas near your furnace, it can be a serious issue. However, there are a few times when it’s nothing to worry about and is considered perfectly normal.
When a Gas Smell Isn’t Serious
It’s not uncommon to smell gas when you turn your furnace on for the first time that year. The gas smell is likely coming from dust getting burnt as it’s been dormant for months. The smell is faint and will go away in a few minutes.
It also not unusual for there to be a faint smell of gas when your furnace turns on each time. This, too, will quickly fade away. If you haven’t had your furnace tuned-up in a while, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment so a heating technician can make sure everything is safe.
Another possibility is gas is getting blown back through a nearby open window. Or it could come from things nearby such as a gas stove, compost heap, or trash can. Move these away from your furnace, so you are better able to isolate the smell.
Possibly a Broken Heat Exchanger
If the smell of gas is strong and coming from your furnace, the most likely reason is the heat exchanger is cracked. This is a serious situation that needs to be dealt with immediately.
Turn your furnace off, open some windows, and evacuate your home. Call your utility or fire department to make sure your home is safe, and then an HVAC company to handle the problem. This particular situation is dangerous, and the need for emergency service should not be postponed or ignored.
The heat exchanger separates combustion gas from the warm air that is blown into your home. When it cracks, it can’t do its job. It’s almost always the case you have to replace your furnace when the heat exchanger breaks, as it’s the heart of your furnace.
